The Kevin Punter Jr. Scholarship
The Kevin Punter Jr. Scholarship is an annual $4,000 award to a qualified African American student attending Salesian High School in New Rochelle, NY. Offered by Salesian High School alumnus Kevin Punter, Jr. ’11, this scholarship is an effort to provide qualified students acknowledgement of their character with the opportunity to evidence their growth as a whole person. The scholarship is not solely based on the student’s athletic ability or their academics, its primary intention is to help young men of color achieve success by providing access to a high-quality Salesian education and instilling in them the confidence to help their communities.
In order for the awardee to maintain the scholarship, they must evidence effort and contribution to the school community, with the scholarship being reviewed every June/July for renewal. In order to apply, interested candidates must be:
- African-American male student
- The student must be currently enrolled, or set to enroll in Salesian High School
- Demonstrate a strong capacity for growth academically, socially, and emotionally
Interested applicants should be able to highlight active presence and participation in their communities and parishes, including but not limited to:
- Community service/volunteer work
- Youth organizations
- Participation in local parishes and churches
Applicants must also provide two (2) letters of recommendation (immediate & distant family members are excluded.) No more than one (1) letter should come from a member of the student’s school. Acceptable sources include, but are not limited to:
- Youth Organization leaders/organizers
- Parish/Church leaders
All interested candidates must submit a 1000 word essay. In addition, any incoming 9th-grade students must also submit a final 7th and 8th grade report card.
If selected, candidates will proceed to the next stage of the process and will be interviewed by the Kevin Punter, Jr. Scholarship Oversight Committee. Interested 8th-grade applicants must submit their applications and essay no later than February 14th, 2022.
