The Salesian High School family lost a dear friend and mentor on Dec. 23, 2020. George Janvier, or affectionately known by his students as “Mr. J,” worked at Salesian for three years as the school’s coordinator of youth ministry. He was a very active member of the Salesian High School community and beloved by all. He led the school choir, assisted in student government, organized midnight runs to help the homeless and weekly trips to a local soup kitchen.
George was very involved in his home parish Saint Frances of Rome in the Bronx, where he was their youth minister and led many events at the parish. He was also the head basketball coach of Our Lady of Grace in the Bronx.
George will be remembered for the many life lessons he taught the young men of Salesian High School. According to his fellow faculty members, George was always there if you needed him and always willing to lend a listening ear. If you were having a bad day or needed to talk, George was there for you and knew all the right things to change your mood.
He was a man that led by example for students and faculty. He was a man that lived his life to the fullest by putting his family and Salesian before himself to make sure everyone was taken care of. He was a true man of God and lived out the Salesian values and traditions of St. John Bosco every day.
On January 29, 2021, Salesian High School dedicated the student lobby to George Janvier.
We invite you to read the touching tribute published by Catholic New York shortly after George’s passing.
